Glazing compound (also called window putty or glazing putty) is a oil-based or latex-based sealant that fills the small gap between a glass pane and the wood rabbet (groove) it sits in, creating a weather-resistant seal. It is the traditional method for setting glass in wood-frame windows, particularly single-pane windows in older homes.
Over time, glazing compound dries out, shrinks, and cracks, losing its seal. Signs of failed glazing include:
Re-glazing a wood window is a traditional skill. Remove all old putty (heat gun or putty knife), clean the rabbet, apply fresh putty triangularly at 45ยฐ, smooth with a glazing tool or wet finger, let cure, then prime and paint to seal. Cost for professional re-glazing: $50โ$150 per window.
