The window jamb refers to the two vertical side pieces of the window frame that form the sides of the window opening. Together with the head (top horizontal member) and the sill (bottom horizontal member), the jambs form the complete window frame. The jambs are the structural elements that carry the window’s weight and transfer loads to the rough opening in the wall.
When replacing windows, the new frame is often narrower than the original rough opening. Jamb extensions are flat boards added to the interior edges of the new frame to fill the gap between the window and the interior wall surface (drywall or plaster).
