Definition

The vertical side members of a window frame that form the structural sides of the window opening and house the window balance mechanisms.

The window jamb refers to the two vertical side pieces of the window frame that form the sides of the window opening. Together with the head (top horizontal member) and the sill (bottom horizontal member), the jambs form the complete window frame. The jambs are the structural elements that carry the window’s weight and transfer loads to the rough opening in the wall.

Parts of the Jamb Assembly

  • Jamb โ€” the full-depth structural member fitting into the rough opening
  • Jamb liner / balance channel โ€” the interior track or channel in which the sash slides and the balance mechanisms are mounted
  • Stop bead โ€” a narrow strip attached to the jamb that limits the sash travel and forms the seal
  • Parting bead โ€” in double-hung windows, a narrow strip between the upper and lower sash channels

Common Jamb Problems

  • Rotted jamb โ€” wood jambs are vulnerable to water damage, especially at the bottom. Extensive rot requires jamb or full-frame replacement.
  • Out-of-square jamb โ€” house settling or moisture movement can rack the frame, binding the sash
  • Damaged jamb liner โ€” cracked or broken plastic liners in vinyl windows can prevent sash operation; most are replaceable

Jamb Extensions

When replacing windows, the new frame is often narrower than the original rough opening. Jamb extensions are flat boards added to the interior edges of the new frame to fill the gap between the window and the interior wall surface (drywall or plaster).
