Oakwood is a small city of about 9,500 people sitting on the hill just south of downtown Dayton, and it holds one of the best-preserved collections of early-twentieth-century homes in Ohio. More than half of its houses were built in 1939 or earlier. The city grew up as an electric streetcar suburb — cars ran up the median of Far Hills Avenue from 1895 until 1936 — and boomed after the 1913 Dayton flood sent families looking for high, dry ground.
