A window hinged at the top that swings outward from the bottom, allowing ventilation even during light rain since the open sash acts as an awning over the opening.

An awning window is hinged at the top of the sash and operated by a crank or push bar that swings the bottom of the sash outward. When open, the sash forms an angled canopy over the opening โ€” like an awning โ€” which sheds rain away from the opening and allows ventilation during light rain. This makes awning windows uniquely practical for bathrooms, kitchens, and areas where windows may be left open in variable weather.

Awning vs. Casement vs. Hopper

  • Awning โ€” hinged at top, opens outward from bottom. Rain-resistant ventilation.
  • Casement โ€” hinged on side, opens outward from opposite side. Maximum ventilation.
  • Hopper โ€” hinged at bottom, opens inward from top. Common in basements; easy to clean exterior from inside.

Where Awning Windows Work Best

  • Above kitchen sinks (easy to reach crank; ventilates cooking odors)
  • Bathrooms (privacy + ventilation; rain doesn’t enter when open)
  • Paired below or above fixed picture windows to add ventilation without changing the view
  • High on walls where opening from the bottom is impractical

Awning Window and Egress

Awning windows almost never meet egress requirements. The opening angle is limited (typically 45ยฐ), reducing the clear opening height below the 24-inch IRC minimum. Do not use awning windows in sleeping room locations where egress is required.

Common Awning Window Repairs

  • Failed crank operator โ€” same mechanism as casement; replacement operators $15โ€“$40
  • Operator arm detached โ€” the arm connects the crank to the sash; pivot pins wear and detach
  • Sash won’t seal โ€” worn perimeter weatherstrip or warped sash prevents full closure; re-weatherstripping or sash adjustment needed
  • Hinge failure โ€” top hinges bear the full weight of the sash; worn hinges cause the sash to sag and bind
