Flexible sealing material applied around operable window (and door) edges to prevent air and water infiltration when the window is closed.

Weatherstripping is the compressible sealing material that runs along the edges of operable window sashes (and door frames) to create an airtight, weather-resistant closure when the window is shut. It is one of the most cost-effective home improvement upgrades available, with a typical payback period under two years through energy savings.

Types of Window Weatherstripping

  • V-strip (tension seal) โ€” durable plastic or metal strip folded into a V-shape; installs into the channel along the side jambs of double-hung windows. Long-lasting and effective.
  • Foam tape โ€” adhesive-backed open- or closed-cell foam; easy DIY install, but compresses permanently and needs replacement every 2โ€“3 years.
  • Door sweep / pile weatherstrip โ€” brush-pile material used along sliding window rails; low friction, long-lasting.
  • EPDM rubber gasket โ€” factory-installed on modern windows; very durable but difficult to replace DIY.

Signs You Need New Weatherstripping

  • Visible daylight around closed window sash
  • Cold drafts near windows in winter
  • Higher than normal heating/cooling bills
  • Weatherstripping that is cracked, brittle, or compressed flat

How to Replace Weatherstripping

Most V-strip and foam tape weatherstripping is a DIY-friendly repair. Remove the old material, clean the channel thoroughly, and press or nail the new strip into place. Professional replacement is recommended for EPDM gaskets factory-integrated into the sash or frame.
