Window Screen

A window screen is a frame fitted with a fine mesh — usually fiberglass or aluminum — that installs in the window opening to allow fresh air in while keeping insects, leaves, and debris out. Most double-hung and single-hung windows have screens that cover either the lower half or the full opening depending on the window style.

Screen Mesh Types

• Fiberglass mesh — the most common; flexible, doesn’t dent or crease permanently, corrosion-resistant, inexpensive. Standard 18×16 mesh (18 strands per inch horizontally, 16 vertically) blocks most insects.
• Aluminum mesh — more rigid than fiberglass; slightly more durable but dents easily and can corrode near salt air.
• Pet-resistant screen — heavier-gauge vinyl-coated polyester; resists tears from pet claws; 7× stronger than standard fiberglass.
• Solar/privacy screen — dense mesh (90% blockage) that reduces solar heat gain by up to 70% and reduces UV fading of interior furnishings.
• Ultra-fine “no-see-um” screen — 20×20 mesh or finer for blocking tiny insects like gnats and midges; reduces airflow slightly.

Common Screen Problems

• Torn or holed mesh — even a small hole lets insects in. Patch kits work for holes under ½ inch; larger tears warrant full re-screening.
• Bent or broken frame — aluminum frames dent easily. Replacement frames are inexpensive ($10–$30).
• Spline failure — the rubber cord (spline) that holds mesh in the frame groove shrinks and hardens over time, allowing mesh to pop out.
• Incorrect fit — screens that rattle or fall out need new tension springs or adjustment tabs.

Re-Screening Cost

Re-screening a standard window is a common DIY project. Mesh rolls cost $15–$30 for a 25-foot roll. Spline and a spline roller tool add another $5–$10. Professional re-screening typically costs $20–$60 per screen including labor and materials.
